Team Penske star Josef Newgarden had an almighty crash at the 2025 IndyCar race at World Wide Technology Raceway. Will Buxton recently came out on a podcast and detailed how the two-time Indy 500 winner's crash at WWTR created a hectic scene in the FOX commentary booth.

The Team Penske drivers had a horrid 2025 season and had failed to get a win as they went into the IndyCar race at WWTR. Will Power and Scott McLaughlin ran in the Top 3 for the first quarter of the race, and the two Penske drivers were favorites for the win.

However, Power ran wide and crashed, which turned the tables, and Josef Newgarden crept his way up to the Top 3. The Nashville resident was able to get into the lead and started creating a gap to P2. The #2 Chevrolet driver seemed to have everything under control when disaster struck, and he was upside down.

Will Buxton, who left F1TV at the end of the 2024 season and joined FOX’s IndyCar broadcast team as the play-by-play announcer ahead of the 2025 season. Buxton featured on the DIVEBOMB IndyCar podcast and was questioned about an unforgettable moment from the 2025 IndyCar season as an announcer.

The Briton detailed how he was having a pizza slice during the commercial break when Josef Newgarden crashed at WWTR, and the same led to hectic scenes.

“Going to commercial break with a Josef Newgarden heroshot. As we were doing that, I pick up a piece of pizza because you have to get your food down quickly during a commercial break just to try and keep the energy levels up. I got a piece of pizza in one hand, there's the Josef Newgarden hero shots playing, he's leading,” said Buxton (20:00 onwards) “Then suddenly we hear the, it was Mitch or Pam or both are screaming in my ears going, we're coming back, we're coming back, we're coming back. They cut the hero shots and Josef's upside down, skidding down the track. That will stick in the memory for a very, a very, very long time,” added Buxton

Josef Newgarden's upside-down crash at World Wide Technology Raceway

Josef Newgarden, from the lead of the race, was about to put Louis Foster a lap down. However, as the IndyCar rookie made his way through the final turn, he ran wide into the marbles and slammed into the outside barrier, lost control of the car, and drifted towards the inside barrier.

Newgarden was coming up behind Foster and saw the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver crash and move across the track. The Team Penske driver failed to avoid contact, crashed into the RLL, and was flipped upside down before sliding the length of the start-finish straight.

Newgarden declined to speak after the incident. Kyle Kirkwood went on to win the race
