Giancarlo Stanton is the designated hitter of the New York Yankees and likely will be until the 13-year contract he signed with the Miami Marlins runs out.
Following the 2027 season, the Yankees have a $25 million club option for Stanton for 2028. New York will pay him a $10 million buyout if it declines.
Stanton's remaining contract, among other reasons, is why the Yankees won't make a trade with the Houston Astros for an MVP candidate.
Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer lists the Yankees as someone who could use Yordan Alvarez in their lineup, but they don't necessarily need him.
"Alvarez at Yankee Stadium? That idea alone is worth throwing the Yankees into the hypothetical mix," Rymer wrote Wednesday. "But they just don't need another slugger, and indeed should be focused on trading for a whole new bullpen."
The Astros owe Alvarez $28.6 million million per year through the 2028 season. At 28, he's eight years younger than Stanton but faces similar defensive and injury struggles as the potential future Hall of Famer.

When healthy, Alvarez is nearly a lock to hit 30-40 home runs per season and post an OPS of at least .850 or higher.
But there's no clear fit for him on the Yankees if the Astros decide to admit their dynasty days are behind them and sell at the deadline.
