Wild trade for 38-year old defenseman from Panthers before deadline

The Minnesota Wild are staying busy before Friday's NHL trade deadline.

Their latest move involves acquiring one of the oldest players in the league from the Florida Panthers.

The guy on the move: Jeff Petry, according to The Athletic's Michael Russo. The return cost is minimal -- a conditional seventh-round pick.

Petry turned 38 years old in December.

He entered the NHL all the way back in 2006 as a second-round pick by the Edmonton Oilers out of Michigan State University.

This season, Petry has played 58 games for the Panthers and dished out eight assists. He also has 57 blocked shots and 59 hits in an average of 14 minutes and 51 seconds of ice time per game.

Petry has played 16 NHL seasons across the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins and now the Panthers.

That's a total of 1,039 NHL games. He has scored 96 goals and distributed 297 assists (393 points). He also has 1,616 blocked shots and 2,090 hits.

Petry is a 6-foot-3 defenseman and he fits the mold of the rare player being sought after at this trade deadline: a right-shot defenseman.

He likely doesn't have a lot of his NHL career left, but Petry will go to a strong contender for the stretch run of this season. He's a free agent after the season, and there's a chance this is his final go at it.

It's a low-cost addition for the Wild that adds some serious experience to their roster.
