The Cleveland Browns have two veterans, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, on expiring contracts and two rookies, Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, taken on the second and third day of the NFL draft, respectively.
Forget that there may not be a franchise cornerstone in the bunch. The likelihood of all four staying on the roster for the 2025 season is almost completely nonexistent.
“The widespread belief around the NFL is that Cleveland will not keep all four quarterbacks on its roster in 2025,” CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford wrote.
Who’s the odd man out?
“Talent-wise, I think both those guys have a huge advantage over Kenny Pickett. Kenny Pickett has to be light years better than each of them to make the team. To me, I think Joe Flacco is just in case they don't feel like they can be competent at the position, then you insert Joe. I think their Week 1 starter is going to be one of those two rookies. I really feel that way,” NFL insider Daniel Jeremiah said on Thursday’s episode of The Rich Eisen Show.
“I think you have to learn this year. They made that trade, so they've got some ammunition for next year. Next year at this time, they have to know what they have in those two rookies. They have to see them, and that's why, to me, I don't think you waste time... You have to evaluate these two kids that you just drafted, so before this next draft, you have some clarity of what you have on campus.”
Sanders’ recent speeding ticket in Strongsville, Ohio, isn’t ideal for a fifth-round pick, but the Browns aren’t going to cut a player for that when many employed across the NFL have done far worse.
A third-round pick was spent on Gabriel, so ditching him so soon is unfathomable. Ditto for re-signing Flacco, the last quarterback to get the team into the playoffs, and ditching him immediately.
Cutting bait with Pickett is the easiest pill to swallow for the franchise, all things considered.
