Why Yankees should eventually move Ryan Weathers to bullpen

23 minutes ago 2

The New York Yankees have one of, if not the best, starting rotations in baseball.

But things will get crowded when Max Fried returns from the injured list.

Even without Fried, the Yankees have Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers.

There's even more depth in the minors, as Elmer Rodriguez and Luis Gil are potential spot-start guys.

However, Gil is currently out with shoulder inflammation. When Fried returns, the two starters the Yankees could consider moving to the bullpen are Warren and Weathers.

The left-handed Weathers appears to be the more logical choice, The Athletic's Brendan Kuty wrote.

"It’s also possible the Yankees consider transitioning lefty Ryan Weathers from the rotation to the bullpen as his innings pile up," Kuty wrote. "He’s never pitched more than 94 2/3 innings in a season in the majors, and he’s already at 57 1/3 with a 3.14 ERA in 10 starts."

It's not that Weathers is not deserving of a rotation spot. His injury history should be a concern, but the Yankees could also use some more velocity in the middle innings.

Both Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough have done a fine job, but manager Aaron Boone will rarely hand them the ball in high-leverage situations.

Of all New York's starters, Weathers may be the best fit for the job.
