Wataru Endo has been one of the most reliable Japanese international footballers for more than a decade, growing into their captain.
But in a late twist, the Liverpool midfielder won't be taking part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The update came only within the past week. Japan was counting on the 33-year old Endo to take part.
He's a key stalwart in the middle of the park with great defensive capabilities as well as strong leadership.
Japan is a dark horse to make a run, but without Endo, it'll be a bit tougher.

Why isn't Wataru Endo playing at the World Cup?
Endo actually retired from international football only days before Japan's opening match at the 2026 World Cup.
He was initially announced as having withdrawn from the squad due to a foot injury.
He then took to social media to announce his retirement from the Japanese national team.

Endo had surgery on his left foot in February, then left Japan's tune-up match against Iceland at halftime.
“Since getting injured and up till this point, I’ve done everything I could and I have no regret," Endo wrote on social media. “With this campaign, I will be retiring from the national team. So from here on, I’ll be cheering for the Japan national team as one of the fans.”
Ko Itakura took over as captain with Endo's departure.
The Japanese fanbase will be grateful for his long-lasting contributions, but it's tough news that he'll miss out on this tournament.
