Why Toronto Tempo are parting ways with Marina Mabrey's sister Dara

The WNBA is busy on Thursday with players being waived.

It's a tough time as preseason rosters begin to get whittled down to their final regular season size.

For the Toronto Tempo, that meant waiving three players, according to the league's official transaction log:

  • Dara Mabrey
  • Kristy Wallace
  • Madison Rocci

For Mabrey, it's not unexpected, but it is a bummer. Her sister, Marina, is expected to be one of the top players this season for the Tempo.

Why did the Toronto Tempo waive Dara Mabrey?

The reality is that Dara was never likely to make a WNBA roster.

Her college career concluded in 2022, and she hasn't played a single WNBA minute in a regular season game since then.

It seems the Tempo brought her aboard to have her at training camp with her sister.

Dara was a solid college player but not a great one. She averaged 10 points per game and shot 38% from 3-point range.

In a bigger league, maybe she'd have a shot at a bench spot somewhere.

But in the WNBA's current size, there wasn't space for this Mabrey sister.
