Why the Chicago Bears should sign Taylor Decker before training camp

The Chicago Bears are set to take the field for training camp in about a month, but there is still a glaring need on the roster that general manager Ryan Poles should address before late July.

Chicago can't be comfortable with their current left tackle situation. With Ozzy Trapilo likely to miss most of the 2026 season due to a ruptured patellar tendon, the Bears are currently slated to have an open competition for the starting left tackle spot between Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills Jr., and others.

In a division with a plethora of dynamic pass rushers, the Bears can't afford to take a risk at left tackle and have the position be a weakness. That's why the team should sign former Detroit Lions tackle Taylor Decker at some point in the next month.

Why Bears should sign Taylor Decker before training camp

Decker has yet to find a new home after requesting his release from the Lions in March due to contract disagreements.

In his 10-year career with the Lions, Decker started 140 games and was a Pro Bowler just two years ago in 2024 as Jared Goff's blindside protector. The 32-year-old also played pretty well in 2025, allowing just two sacks and 33 quarterback pressures in 14 starts, though his run blocking left a lot to be desired.

Nevertheless, Decker would be a massive upgrade over anyone the Bears could field at left tackle right now. The Ohio State has a ton of experience as a starter and has played in the NFC North his entire career, so he also knows the division really well.

Additionally, given his age and recent injury concerns, Decker shouldn't cost too much to sign. Chicago still has around $8 million to use in cap space, and Decker would surely sign for less than that.

Overall, Decker isn't an elite starting tackle, and his injury history does raise some concerns. However, the veteran would immediately step in as the starter at the most vital position on the Bears' offensive line and provide adequate protection of Caleb Williams' blindside.

Chicago needs to make this signing before camp and not rely on an uncertain situation at left tackle.
