Why Survivor’s Jeff Probst Doubled Over During Intense Challenge

Jeff Probst Weighs in on Possibility of a ‘Golden Survivor’ Season

Jeff Probst couldn’t outwit this steamy obstacle.

The Survivor host shared major behind-the-scenes details from the Oct. 29 episode’s reward challenge, including the moment he almost passed out once the race started.

“The island where that challenge took place is the single hottest spot we ever shoot in Fiji,” Jeff, 63, explained during the Oct. 30 episode of his On Fire podcast. “It might be the hottest spot in all of Fiji and I don’t know why. I’ve asked people on our team and I never get a good answer. But I’m sure there’s somebody listening right now saying, ‘It’s a basic barometric pressure.’”

He continued of the location’s humid weather, “It’s like you’re in a sauna and someone is pouring more water on the coals,” he added. “I’m not exaggerating.”

Indeed, Fiji’s sweltering heat had the longtime host gasping for air. In the season 49 episode, the remaining contestants competed in a race that involved them pushing a heavy cart down a path, climbing ladders, carrying around sandbags, and knocking down bamboo targets.

But as the players neared the finish line, Jeff noticeably doubled over and tried to catch his breath.

“Jeff, you out of breath, too?” contestant Rizo Velovic, 25, asked him, before Jeff replied, “It’s no joke, man!”

Though the CBS series has filmed at the island country since 2016, the longtime host noted that he and the team still aren’t accustomed to the scorching weather.

“You have this amazing boat ride. It’s beautiful skies, the wind is blowing your hair back, you feel amazing,” he continued. “And then you step off the boat and walk into this dense forest. The cliché is, everybody says, ‘Man, it’s so hot today.’ And we all know we say it, and we all try not to say it. And then you walk in and go, ‘But my God, it’s hot! It’s so hot again today!’”

This isn’t the first time the Survivor cast has been affected by the location’s climate—and its inhabitants. Earlier in the season, Jake Latimer was bit by a venomous sea snake as he stood in the ocean’s shallows. Jeff noted that the medical team—filled with “doctors, nurses and paramedics”—were quick to tend to Jake’s injury at the time and ruled that he wasn’t affected by the venom.

“Jake was in the absolute best care he could ever hope for someone bitten by a snake in the middle of the ocean,” he reflected on the horrifying experience to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month. “I still get asked all the time if Survivor is real. But for anyone who still wonders, that was a real sea krait, that was a real bite, and that was a very terrifying situation.”
