The Las Vegas Raiders showed their fans the first glimpse at No. 1 overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza in Week 5, as he came into the game when it was already over against the New England Patriots.

Mendoza got into the game, made a few passes, and didn't show anything overwhelmingly positive or negative. But just seeing him play for the Raiders was exciting. But when will the Raiders hand the keys over to Mendoza as the starter?

According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the Raiders have no plans to make a change "any time soon." Kirk Cousins will remain the starter for the time being, with Mendoza firmly slotted into the QB2 role for the foreseeable future.

Raiders have no plans to start Mendoza 'any time soon'

"The Raiders threw Fernando Mendoza in at the end of Sunday's blowout loss to the Patriots, but I am told Kirk Cousins is in no danger of being benched any time soon," Graziano writes. "The Raiders were happy to get Mendoza's feet wet, but they remain in no hurry to make him their starter, especially sitting at 3-2 themselves."

In his NFL debut, Mendoza threw for 48 yards, going six-of-eight, with a long completion of 16 yards. The Raiders' rookie also ran for three yards, coming up just short on a fourth-down attempt.

While Raiders fans are eagerly waiting to see Mendoza make a start and get extended playing time in the NFL, it appears likely they'll have to wait for a while longer.

Cousins is still the starter, at least while the Raiders are in contention, and he's playing fairly well. Of course, a few things could change this QB situation.

If Cousins were to get hurt, the Raiders would turn things over to Mendoza. Cousins struggling would also put Mendoza in line to play for the Raiders, though it'd take some really poor performances for Cousins to get benched.

So, while Raiders fans got their first taste of Mendoza in Week 5, it might be a long time before they see him again this season.

Unsurprisingly, the Raiders are going to slow-play Mendoza's NFL debut as a starter. It might be a while before he starts, which was one realistic outcome coming into the season for this Raiders team.
