No announcer duo in NFL history has been together longer than Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.

From their initial three-man crew alongside Cris Collinsworth beginning in 2002, to becoming Fox Sports' lead two-man crew by 2005 then transitioning to ESPN in 2022, the voices of Buck and Aikman have become synonymous with a big game. But the duo faces an uncertain future.

Buck recently signed a reported extension to remain at ESPN for the longer-term, but Aikman has not — and based on a new report from Front Office Sports, the two have had direct tension in the booth over their contract statuses.

Here's why Aikman's contract status with ESPN has reportedly led to tension with Buck.

How Troy Aikman's ESPN negotiations are impacting booth with Joe Buck

Last month, The Athletic reported that Buck has reached a new six-year deal with ESPN that will keep him as the voice of "Monday Night Football" for years to come, including through the network’s next Super Bowl in 2031. ESPN has coverage of this NFL season's Super Bowl. That deal was reportedly worth around $108 million.

The 2026 NFL season was going to be Buck's final in his current deal, which is also the case with Aikman, per The Athletic. Aikman's five-year, $90 million contract with ESPN ends after the Super Bowl in February, and unlike Buck, he has yet to sign an extension.

In 2022, Buck and Aikman wound up moving together in an NFL broadcaster free agency of sorts, both leaving Fox for ESPN.

With Buck now locked down at ESPN for the long-term, but Aikman's future with the network unclear, the two have had "tension" recently, Front Office Sports reported on Wednesday.

In fact, according to Front Office Sports, the two "broke the ice" on Monday night in an argument prior to their call of Bills vs. Rams in Week 6. The argument "ultimately de-escalated, and the two had a broadcast in which viewers never would have been able to decipher that something was amiss," per FOS.

Exclusive: There has been tension between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman over contract talks with ESPN, FOS has learned. Buck, who inked a new deal, “broke the ice” on the matter with Aikman, who's yet to receive a formal offer. The two had an argument that ultimately de-escalated.

In that report, ESPN declined to comment, while neither Buck nor Aikman have confirmed the tension issues or an argument. However, there remains potential for some NFL broadcaster shake-ups after the 2026 NFL season — including Aikman's status at ESPN.

With Tony Romo's exit from CBS and long-standing rumors of Greg Olsen eventually joining a No. 1 booth, Aikman could be one of many big names in NFL broadcasters to change networks by next offseason.
