Why Olivia Munn stopped post-mastectomy scar treatment after Skims campaign

4 hours ago 1

Olivia Munn stopped a post-mastectomy cosmetic treatment for her scars after showing them off in a Skims campaign last year.

“Ever since I got such an amazing, loving response from the Skims campaign, I stopped doing laser treatment on my scars,” the actress, 44, told Access Hollywood on Monday at the Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s 2025 An Unforgettable Evening.

“I had all my appointments, and I was doing them, and I had all my appointments scheduled for the next year, and I just canceled all of them.”

Munn said she wanted to focus on “putting it out there and embracing” her battle with breast cancer, which she beat.

The “Newsroom” star marveled that it wasn’t “just the world embracing it.” More specifically, it was “the women who have these scars” and those who have “seen their mother going through this.”

She explained, “And now these scars, at least on me, I’m proud of them now. They’re not something that I wanna cover up as much anymore because everyone has been so sweet about it.”

Munn starred in the October 2024 campaign for Kim Kardashian’s shapewear and undergarment brand, modeling a selection of bestsellers, including Skims’ viral push-up bra with built-in nipples.

In the photos, the mother of two struck poses in the Ultimate Nipple Bra ($64) as well as the Ultimate Teardrop Push-Up Bra ($60).

She also modeled black high-waisted leggings and covered the majority of her bare breasts with her arms, which highlighted one of her scars from her double mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

“It’s an honor to partner with Skims and Susan G. Komen on this incredible campaign. This cause is deeply personal to me, and I’m proud to help drive awareness and conversation around it,” Munn said at the time in a press release from Skims, which donated 10 percent of bra sales between Oct. 23 and Oct. 31 to the charity.

“Skims’ commitment to empowerment and community aligns perfectly with the message of this campaign, which is all about confidence, comfort and feeling your best self. That’s exactly how I felt shooting this.”

Munn, who is married to comedian John Mulaney, elaborated on Instagram at the time that she was “in the middle” of the photo shoot when she “decided [she] was done being insecure about [her] mastectomy scars.”

“Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought,” she penned, adding, “I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see this photo and feel all the love I’m sending.”

Munn was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2023 and underwent a double mastectomy shortly after; however, she did not reveal the news until the following March.

Before the public was aware of her private health battle, Munn admitted to feeling “stressed” about getting dressed for red carpets and events because she has “some divots and dents on one side of [her] body near where the lymph nodes were,” noting that her doctors “had to really dig out” the cancer.

During a June 2024 podcast appearance, the “X-Men: Apocalypse” star confessed that she “cried [for] a week” after the double mastectomy, prior to receiving her permanent implants.

Before beginning her “aggressive” treatment plan, which included a hysterectomy, Munn froze embryos with Mulaney, 42, with whom she shares son Malcolm, 3.

The couple welcomed daughter Méi via surrogate in September 2024.
