Former No. 2 overall pick Dylan Crews won't be with the Washington Nationals on Opening Day.
Instead, the Nationals have announced that Crews is being optioned to Triple-A Rochester. That's where he'll begin the 2026 season.
"Absolutely a surprise, though it felt like this could be in the cards," The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum wrote on X on Friday afternoon.
It's certainly a bummer for Crews, who has spent multiple seasons getting time in the major leagues already.
Crews got 293 at bats last season and batted .208 with 10 home runs and 17 stolen bases.
His next chance to play in the majors will come only after a stint in Triple-A.

Why is Dylan Crews being sent down to Triple-A?
Dylan Crews is being sent down to get more experience.
The thinking is that Crews didn't spend a lot of time in the minor leagues after being drafted out of LSU, and maybe he'll benefit from more now.
"When a new staff comes in, nothing is out of the question," Nusbaum wrote earlier this month. "He was rushed through the minor leagues, and if they feel a reset in AAA is the best thing for his career, this doesn't feel like a front office that is afraid to take those risks. That said, when talking with Butera today, he felt there wasn't any sort of overhaul needed with his swing. So do with that what you will."
Well, no matter the reason, the reality is that Crews is heading down. He'll have to do his best to prove he needs a return trip sooner rather than later.
