Why Michigan lifted interim tag and hired Mike Boynton to replace Dusty May as head basketball coach

Less than a month after Dusty May left Michigan for the Mavericks, the Wolverines have finally landed on an official replacement at head coach. It's the same man the program tasked with being its interim head coach in the immediate aftermath of May's departure.

On Friday, Michigan announced that it had agreed to a two-year deal with former assistant Mike Boynton Jr. The 44-year-old was a vital member of May's staff, having emerged as a star recruiter and player developer during his time in Ann Arbor.

Why did Michigan hire Mike Boynton?

Michigan appointed Boynton to its head coaching post on an interim basis following May's departure. The program sought continuity in Boynton, who joined the Wolverines as May's first assistant coach hire in April 2024.

To that end, Michigan retained the whole of its incoming recruiting class following May's departure, with all nine members of the Wolverines' incoming class — the No. 2-ranked class in the country — opting to take their talents to Ann Arbor.

Michigan's athletic department lauded Boynton for his coaching experience and contributions to the Wolverines' success over the past two seasons. Athletic Director Warde Manuel cited Boynton's development skills as the reason for the program's decision to name him its official basketball coach.

"Mike is a veteran assistant with strong head coaching experience and a clear understanding of the standard we expect at Michigan," Manuel said. "Over the past two seasons, he has been an invaluable member of our staff, bringing stability, leadership and perspective during an important period of success. Our players and staff believe in his vision, are committed to his leadership and are excited for the opportunity to pursue great success together this season."

Mike Boynton coaching history

Prior to his time with the Wolverines, Boynton served as the head coach at Oklahoma State. He spent seven years with the Cowboys, taking them to one NCAA tournament. Boynton is renowned for his player development skills, spearheading Oklahoma State's pursuit of future 2021 No. 1 pick Cade Cunningham.

Boynton went 119-109 during his seven years with the Cowboys. He was sacked following the conclusion of the 2024 season.
