Why Lions released Terrion Arnold after kidnapping, armed robbery charges

Hours after being released from custody following a weekend in jail, Terrion Arnold has been released by the Detroit Lions.

The Lions announced Monday that they cut the former first-round pick after two seasons, following an arrest on multiple felony charges that could leave him facing an extended prison sentence.

Arnold was released on a $1 million bond earlier Monday, with a judge ruling that the 23-year-old wouldn't have to wear an ankle monitor but would be confined to his home with exceptions for Lions practices and games. That cleared the way for Arnold to participate in training camp starting in July, but the Lions had other plans.

Here's what you need to know about Arnold's release by the Lions.

Why Lions released Terrion Arnold

Arnold was arrested Thursday on eight felony charges — three kidnapping charges, three armed robbery charges, one conspiracy to kidnap charge and one conspiracy to commit armed robbery charge.

The former Alabama cornerback is accused of organizing the kidnapping and assault of men whom he believed had stolen a significant amount of money and goods from him. Prosecutors claim Arnold wrongly suspected the three men of stealing.

Both kidnapping and armed robbery charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Arnold was drafted to bolster the Lions' secondary in 2024 but struggled to live up to expectations in two seasons with Detroit and missed about half of the 2025 season due to injury.
