Why Kaiya Wynn is leaving Tennessee women's basketball program after 'breaking point' on senior day

Emotions tend to run high in March, when a player's college career can end in an instant. One Tennessee women's basketball player is choosing to end her career on her own terms.

Lady Vols guard Kaiya Wynn left the program after reaching her "breaking point" on senior day following a perceived slight from coach Kim Caldwell.

Wynn, who missed the entire 2024-25 season with an injury and only appeared in nine games this season, explained her decision on social media. Tennessee has not made the departure official.

Here's what you need to know about Wynn's exit from Knoxville.

Why is Kaiya Wynn leaving Tennessee?

Wynn announced that she is leaving Tennessee after she did not receive the chance to start on senior day.

"As someone who has never started a career game, l was hoping to start in my last appearance in Thompson-Boling. That obviously did not happen, and to be asked to check into the game with 15 seconds left while losing was not how I wanted to spend my final moments in my arena after five years," Wynn said on social media. "Although that was not the sole reason, it was the breaking point for me. I have the utmost love and respect for my teammates and this program and wish everyone nothing but the best."

Wynn carefully pointed out that the senior day slight was not her only reason for leaving the program, but she referred to the moment as her breaking point. She was honored in Tennessee's senior day ceremony before the game:

Though she's played minimal minutes this year, she got a huge cheer from the crowd on senior day.

The brief appearance for Wynn on senior day came at the very end of an 87-77 loss to Vanderbilt on Sunday. Wynn only scored five points over the course of the entire season for Tennessee, never cracking the rotation after missing all of the previous season with an Achilles tear.

Tennessee is only 16-12 on the season but is tied for sixth in the loaded SEC and projects as an NCAA Tournament team.

Who is Kaiya Wynn?

Wynn is a fifth-year guard who spent her entire college career at Tennessee. A Texas native, Wynn joined the Lady Vols in 2021 and largely played a limited role in her career, but she started to earn regular minutes in 2023-24 and averaged career-highs with 4.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

After suffering a season-ending Achilles tear ahead of the 2023-24 season, Wynn was able to redshirt what would have been her final season and receive another year of eligibility for 2025-26. Her playing time did not increase compared to her last healthy season. Instead, Wynn remained out of the rotation for Caldwell.

Wynn averaged career-highs across the board when she found her way into the rotation in 2022-23, scoring 4.4 points per game and averaging 2.6 rebounds per game, but an Achilles tear halted her momentum and relegated her to brief appearances after she returned to the court this season.
