Venezuela's run to its first-ever World Baseball Classic title game hasn't been without its hardship.
The Venezuelans suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of Latin American powerhouse the Dominican Republic in their final pool game. They fell down by as many as three runs in their quarterfinals win over Japan. In the semifinals, they were similarly pegged back, falling behind by two runs before erupting for four in the game's waning moments.
Despite the troubles, Venezuela continues to chug along, using a gutsy bullpen and impressive offense to reach the biggest stage of them all; a WBC final clash with the United States.
When Venezuela takes the field on Tuesday night, it will do so without one of its most consequential players -- Astros 2B Jose Altuve.
Altuve, a fixture in the past two WBCs, opted to sit out this time around. His absence is something of a surprise given his adoration for his country and its baseball history.
So, just why is Altuve riding the pine in this year's World Baseball Classic? Here's what you need to know.

Why Jose Altuve is not playing for Venezuela in the WBC
Altuve is one of Venezuela's most successful MLB exports, producing the fourth-most bWAR of any player born in the country. The Maracay, Venezuela native turned out for his national team at the 2017 and 2023 World Baseball Classics, leading the side to a quarterfinal appearance in the latter tournament before bowing out with a thumb fracture.
Freeman, a cornerstone of the national team’s identity for nearly a decade and the reigning World Series MVP, withdrew from the roster just weeks before the tournament’s first pitch.
The diminutive infielder isn't the same player he once was; he was felled by injuries in 2025, undergoing a procedure to remove fluid in a wound between his toes. Nevertheless, his prowess for timely contributions figured to prove useful for an upstart Venezuelan side in 2026.
That didn't come to fruition, however. Altuve opted out of the competition "at the request" of the Astros, who were concerned about his lack of insurance.
The 35-year-old., who will turn 36 during the big-league season, expressed interest in participating in the tournament in the weeks before it took place, only to be denied by his national team.
Altuve wasn't the only Venezuelan to be denied the opportunity to represent his national team in international baseball's preeminent tournament. Dodgers World Series hero Miguel Rojas suffered a similar fate, with MLB's current policy preventing players from receiving insurance for their contracts after turning 37. Rojas, who turned 37 in February, was left out in the lurch as a result of the ruling.
Houston will shell out $33 million to Altuve in 2026, a hefty investment for a 35-year-old who spent more time out of his patented second base position than in it during the 2025 season. Predictably, the Astros want to protect their asset, who still has four years remaining on the $125 million deal he signed with the organization in 2025.
Nevertheless, Altuve's absence is a glaring one. He has remained a fixture at Venezuela games in the meantime, attending his country's win over Italy in the semifinals.

Altuve's numbers have dwindled slightly over the years. But the one-time AL MVP and three-time batting champion remains one of MLB's better hitters, posting a .771 OPS and 112 OPS+ in 2025.

Other notable players on Team Venezuela for World Baseball Classic
Omar Lopez's squad might not be the most talent-laden. But there's still plenty of standouts within Venezuela's ranks. 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. leads the way for the Venezuelans, using his speed, power and range to inflict damage on opposition sides. Luis Arraez, Maikel Garcia and Willson Contreras are also potent, combining for seven All-Star appearances between them.
