Why Jets drafted TE Kenyon Sadiq over WR Makai Lemon at No. 16 overall

The New York Jets came into the 2026 NFL Draft with a few options at No. 2, but they went David Bailey over Arvell Reese in a mild surprise.

But the true surprise came down the board at No. 16 overall. According to Connor Hughes of SNY, the Jets have selected Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

It's a surprise for the Jets, as they're selecting Sadiq over USC wide receiver Makai Lemon despite the team's need for a number two wide receiver. But why did the Jets take Sadiq over Lemon at this pick?

Why Jets drafted Kenyon Sadiq over Makai Lemon

Sadiq is a super athletic playmaker who will be a fun receiving threat for Geno Smith and the Jets. But, with a big wide receiver need, this is an odd selection.

Lemon, who had 1,156 yards receiving with 11 touchdowns this past season, was a lot more productive than Sadiq, who had 560 yards and eight touchdowns.

Garrett Wilson and Adonai Mitchell aren't a good enough WR room, and the Jets need to find a new WR in the draft at some point.

The Oregon Ducks tight end is an intriguing draft pick, but for the Jets, it's an odd fit. Mason Taylor was a second-round pick just one year ago, and now, he's being relegated to backup TE.

While it might seem odd, with a deep wide receiver class and the Jets picking again at No. 33 and No. 44 overall, there is a good chance the Jets can still get a good WR down the board.

Taking the top tight end, who might not have made it to the Jets' pick at No. 33 overall at the top of Round 2, is a fascinating pick for the Jets.

It's an aggressive selection from Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn, but it's a pick that could be a whole lot of fun if the Jets utilize him well in their offense.
