It's the kind of move that feels like it only really happens in the NFL.
The Jacksonville Jaguars cut Evan Engram this offseason, getting rid of a tight end who still could've been in his prime.
The Denver Broncos certainly didn't mind. Their offense was lacking an athletic, skilled TE, and so they signed him in free agency.
It has worked out nicely thus far for the Broncos, while the upstart Jags probably wouldn't mind it if they still had Engram.

Why did the Jaguars cut Evan Engram?
The answer to this kind of a move is always the same: money.
The Jags didn't want to pay Engram anymore, feeling they could use his salary elsewhere, and because a lot of NFL contracts featured non-guaranteed money, cutting Engram brought millions in savings.
It didn't hurt the case that Engram had battled multiple injuries in 2024, leaving the Jags to realize that Brenton Strange could probably fill in at tight end just fine.
Why did the Broncos sign Evan Engram?
The Broncos saw the good in Engram, not the bad.
If Engram stayed healthy, they felt he could fill the "Joker" role in Sean Payton's offense.
So far, so good.
Bo Nix has a lot of weapons and spreads the ball around, but he's proven already that he trusts Engram to deliver, and that should only become a stronger bond as the season goes along.
