Real Madrid are expected to strengthen their midfield next summer as they continue searching for long-term replacements for Toni Kroos and Luka Modric whose departures in 2024 and 2025 have left a hole in Los Blancos midfield.

Both players were central to Madrid’s decade of dominance in Europe and their absence has prompted club officials to identify a successor capable of controlling matches with similar authority.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez has reportedly emerged as a potential target given a player is admired by Madrid’s hierarchy since his breakthrough at Benfica.

The Argentine midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a British record £106.8m [$142m] has continued to impress in the Premier League.

His performances have further impressed Madrid. Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Chelsea have made it clear that Fernández remains central to their long-term rebuild under current management.

Any potential deal would require Real Madrid to pay well over £100m [$133m], a figure the Spanish champions are unlikely to consider in their current financial strategy.

Madrid are also monitoring Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, who has also quickly emerged as one of the main names on their scouting shortlist.
