Why Heat are making Bucks' pick in 2026 NBA Draft after Giannis Antetokounmpo trade

1 hour ago 3

The Giannis Antetokounmpo era in Milwaukee is over, and the next part of the process is beginning for the Bucks.

While the additions of Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis will certainly help the Bucks start rebuilding after trading their franchise great, the franchise has two crucial lottery picks on Tuesday night in a draft loaded with talent.

While two highly regarded prospects will ultimately land in Milwaukee, it won't look that way on stage in Brooklyn.

Here's a look at why the Heat are still making the Bucks' pick at No. 13.

Why Heat are making Bucks' pick

The Antetokounmpo trade has been agreed to but is not yet official, which means the Heat technically own the No. 13 pick for the time being.

Because of the salary involved in the deal, the trade cannot become official until the NBA's moratorium lifts on July 6. That means the player selected at No. 13 won't appear on either the Heat's or Bucks' social media accounts, and he can't be introduced alongside the No. 10 pick for nearly two weeks.

Bucks fans shouldn't worry, however. Milwaukee is still making the selection at No. 13. The Bucks will simply instruct the Heat which player to draft, and he will officially join Milwaukee once the trade can be completed.

Because NBA rules prohibit teams from officially making picks they acquired in trades until those deals are finalized, numerous stars have worn the "wrong" hat on draft night over the years, including Luka Doncic, Trae Young, Kawhi Leonard and Kobe Bryant. If the No. 13 pick becomes a star, a photo of him wearing a Heat cap could become the next iconic draft-night image.

Bucks 2026 draft picks

The Bucks' two lottery picks are their only two selections entering the 2026 draft:

  • No. 10
  • No. 13

Milwaukee will have to trade its way back into the draft if it wants to pick after the lottery, but in a talented draft, No. 10 and No. 13 are two huge opportunities to add talent.

Heat 2026 draft picks

The Heat are still slated to pick 41st in Wednesday's second round:

  • No. 41

Adding to the roster to surround Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo with talent will be a process for Miami, but it won't start at the draft in all likelihood. While the Heat will aim to take a future contributor if they stick at No. 41, more work is ahead in fere agency.
