Why Guardians could have $10 million offseason problem with Steven Kwan

Outfielder Steven Kwan is a fan favorite among Cleveland Guardians fans. 

But could the Guardians consider trading the two-time All-Star during the upcoming offseason? 

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter wrote Tuesday that a Kwan trade is a possibility due to his potential salary for next season. 

"His strong showing in center field this year—442 innings, 5 Defensive Runs Saved and 6 Outs Above Average—has further boosted his value as a potential trade chip," Reuter wrote. "But with his $7.73 million salary likely to rise above $10 million in his final arbitration year, his time in Cleveland could be nearing its end." 

The Guardians operate as a small-market team. But they should be willing to pay Kwan that raise in salary. 

The 28-year-old has won four consecutive Gold Gloves in left field and has proven to be a solid leadoff hitter.

Kwan may not hit many home runs, but he seldom strikes out and provides value on the basepaths, stealing 19 or more bases three times in his first four years in the Majors. 

"The Guardians are currently operating with the lowest payroll in baseball at just over $78 million," Reuter added. "Kwan has undoubtedly been valuable, but organizational history suggests he will likely be on the move this winter after plenty of rumblings in the past." 

It would be a shame if the Guardians traded Kwan, but MLB is a business, and they will do what they feel is best for the organization's future.
