List of UEFA Super Cup winners: All the clubs to win the trophy ever year

The UEFA Super Cup sees the winners of the Champions League and Europa League from the previous season face off at the start of the new campaign.

The showpiece event first took place in the 1973/74 season, but the final was held at the start of the new calendar year (1974), unlike future editions. 

There were several differences from now, with the game initially played between then-named European Cup holders and the European Cup Winners' Cup winners from the first final all the way until 1999, when the latter competition was discontinued. 

The switch from two-legged ties to one-off games at neutral venues happened a year prior, albeit Juventus vs. Liverpool in 1984 and Manchester United vs. Red Star Belgrade in 1991 were single games due to scheduling issues and the breakout of war in Yugoslavia respectively. 

The trophy has been won by nearly all of the biggest clubs in Europe, but who has won it each year and who has won it the most times? The Sporting News takes you through the list of teams that have been crowned UEFA Super Cup champions. 

All-time UEFA Super Cup winners 

The final was first contested in the 1973/74 season and has been held yearly since with the exception of three years.

The very next season after its debut, Bayern Munich of West Germany and Magdeburg of East Germany could not find suitable dates to play the two legs. 

European Cup winners Liverpool could not find a date to play Dinamo Tbilisi in 1981, while the scheduled 1985 edition between Juventus and Everton was not held due to the five-year European ban placed on English clubs following the Heysel Stadium Disaster. 

History of the UEFA Super Cup

The idea for the UEFA Super Cup came from Dutch reporter Anton Witkamp, who wanted a further test of who the best team in Europe truly was at a time of Ajax's Johan Cruyff-led dominance. 

The first official final took place in the 1973/74 season and until 1998/99 was contested between the winners of the European Cup/Champions League and the winners of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 

After the discontinuation of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1999, the Super Cup has been contested between the Champions League winners and the UEFA Cup winners, which was renamed the Europa League in 2009. 

Who has won the most UEFA Super Cups?

A total of 26 clubs have won the UEFA Super Cup, with 15-time Champions League winners Real Madrid unsurprisingly having won the most titles with six to their name. 

All six have come since the turn of the millennium, with their first six European Cup victories in the 1950s and 1960s coming before the advent of the Super Cup. 

Barcelona and Milan are joint-second in the all-time rankings with five apiece, just ahead of Liverpool on four. All three of Atletico Madrid's victories have come as Europa League holders.

The most successful country is of course Spain as a result with England and Italy in second and third.
