Why Dylan Carey wasn't picked in MLB Draft despite winning NCAA baseball's award for top shortstop at Nebraska

1 hour ago 3

Dylan Carey won the Brooks Wallace Award in the 2026 college baseball season.

That's given to the best shortstop in the country, and Carey added it to a collection that also included honors for Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for his play this year with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Despite all that, Carey wasn't drafted.

The MLB Draft is 20 rounds and 613 picks, and Carey wasn't chosen.

Of the 20 rounds and 613 picks in the MLB Draft, not one was used on the best shortstop in college baseball.

Make it make sense.

This outcome has certainly confused Nebraska fans.

Why didn't Dylan Carey get drafted?

In short: It's not clear why Carey wasn't drafted.

His draft stock was never particularly high to begin with -- he wasn't in ESPN's final top-250 rankings for the draft.

That's despite hitting .353 with 15 home runs this season to go with his solid defense.

MLB scouts must've assessed Carey differently than his on-paper accomplishments do.

As a senior, Carey also was no threat to go back to school, so picking him ahead of schedule and paying him over-slot value wasn't going to be in the cards.

It seems likely that he'll get an opportunity to sign a contract with an organization still, but his lack of draft pick remains a mystery.
