DR Congo's match with Uzbekistan figures to be one of the most consequential in its national team's history, with the Leopards needing a win to secure advancement into the knockout stages.
Led by standouts like Yoane Wissa, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Cedric Bakambu, the Congolese look well-equipped to down the Uzbeks and make tournament history for themselves. And yet, when the Leopards take the field, they'll do so without their highest-profile spectator — a living embodiment of former prime minister Patrice Lumumba's legacy around Africa and the world.
With that, here's what you need to know about Lumumba Vea's absence from the DR Congo-Uzbekistan match.

Why DR Congo superfan Lumumba Vea isn't at match against Uzbekistan
Lumumba Vea — real name Michel Nkuka Mboladinga — has been a fixture at DR Congo matches for more than a decade, using soccer matches as a platform to honor his nation's fallen leader, Patrice Lumumba.
He has struggled to make appearances at the 2026 World Cup, however. Lumumba Vea wasn't in attendance when the Leopards held Portugal to a famous draw, missing DR Congo's group opener due to "Ebola-related travel restrictions" that resulted in delaying the approval of his visa application.
He won't be on site for the Leopards' final group stage tilt, either. L'Equipe reported that Vea was denied entry into the United States for DR Congo's decisive match against Uzbekistan. He was denied a visa, preventing him from entering the U.S. for the contest.
Lumumba Vea, DR Congo's most iconic supporter, will miss the Leopards' decisive World Cup match against Uzbekistan after failing to obtain a U.S. visa. — K.Diallo ☭ (@nyeusi_waasi) June 27, 2026Lumumba Vea attended DR Congo's 1-0 loss to Colombia on June 23. That match was held in Guadalajara, which made it easier for spectators from the Global South to attend.
If DR Congo beats Uzbekistan, it will qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in its history. The Leopards remaining contests would all take place in the United States. Because Lumumba Vea's visa was declined, he would prove unable to attend any of DR Congo's remaining games.

Who is Lumumba Vea?
Lumumba Vea is the Leopards' most famous supporter, sporting a distinctive suit and standing on a platform while raising his right arm outward in a tribute to the Democratic Republic of the Congo's first prime minister, Patrice Lumumba.
Lumumba led the country during decolonization, helping found the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC), an independence party calling for an end to Belgian colonial rule. Colonial authorities jailed Lumumba, hoping his detainment would quell the masses' desire to rid their land of their colonial overlords. It didn't work; he was released from prison, spearheading the Congolese Round Table Conference in Brussels, where the nation formally declared independence.
Lumumba was subsequently elected as the nascent country's first prime minister. Shortly after independence, DR Congo fell into chaos, with forces supported by Belgium and the United States seceding. Accused of being a Communist by the West, Lumumba was arrested and tortured by forces loyal to Belgium and the C.I.A. On January 17, 1961, he and three associates were executed. Their bodies was dismembered and dissolved in sulfuric acid, with one of the Belgians present bringing Lumumba's molars and fingers home as trophies, per historian Stuart A. Reid (via The New Yorker).

Lumumba Vea's pose is a tribute to the fallen prime minister, whose statue stands tall in Kinshasa. His nickname, "Lumumba Vea", translates to "Lumumba Lives" in English.
“Patrice Lumumba is a symbol of unity – the one who taught Congolese to stand and to be proud," Lumumba Vea told CNN.
