As 2026 was the first MLB season with ABS challenges, teams and players are still trying to figure out how to handle it. For Los Angeles Dodges centerfielder Andy Pages, though, the decision was made for him.

Pages didn't use challenges in the regular season well, and that carried over into the postseason when he wasted one of the Dodgers' two challenges on a clear strike. As a result, manager Dave Roberts had to take charge to keep Pages from losing any of the team's challenges.

Roberts told media before Game 2 vs. the Atlanta Braves that he had banned Pages from using ABS challenges moving forward in the postseason. This decision was made during the regular season, and then reinforced during Pages' rough performance in Game 1.

Here's why Pages is not allowed to use ABS challenges.

Andy Pages ABS challenges

In his first at bat of Game 1 of the NLDS vs. the Braves, Andy Pages lost one of the Dodgers' ABS challenges in a bad spot. Pages challenged a strike three call with no one on base and two outs, and the ABS system showed that the pitch was clearly a strike.

Really bad challenge from Andy Pages in the second inning with nobody on and two outs. The Dodgers are now down to one challenge for the rest of the game with a shaky umpire behind the plate. This one was a clear strike. https://t.co/yfO4K4F063

During the season, Pages struggled with the new ABS challenge system, as he had just three overturns in 14 attempts on the year. According to baseball savant, out of 526 qualified batters, Pages' ABS challenging ranked No. 467 in the league.

Therefore, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts instructed Pages not to challenge pitches down the stretch of the season. After Pages lost Los Angeles' first challenge on Saturday, Roberts had to remind his center fielder not to take the risk.

Dave Roberts had a conversation with Andy Pages about not using the team’s ABS challenges. Roberts had put the stop sign on Pages in the second half of the season as well. #Dodgers #Braves

In the playoffs, it is paramount that teams don't lose their challenges early, so obvious mistakes like the one Pages made are brutal. Even though the Dodgers won Game 1 over Atlanta 5-3, losing the early challenge could have made a major impact late in the game.
