Why Derrick Henry is playing less snaps in favor of Keaton Mitchell in Week 17

There has been a significant change at the running back position for the Baltimore Ravens this season.

That change has seen superstar running back Derrick Henry not getting as many snaps and touches in 2025 as he has in recent years.

Entering Week 17, Henry has 251 carries, a total that is 74 fewer than he had last season. When it comes to snaps, Henry has seen four-percent fewer, going from 635 during the 2024 campaign to 472 in 2025.

The biggest beneficiary of Henry's reduced workload has been fellow running back Keaton Mitchell, who has taken the RB2 role over after the injured Justice Hill.

Here's why the Ravens have made the change in the backfield.

Why Derrick Henry is playing less snaps

The Ravens have been deploying a rotation for much of the season, likely because the team is trying to keep the 31-year-old Henry fresh throughout the season.

Another reason is Henry isn't a good pass-catcher, so he routinely gets taken out in obvious passing situations, including on third downs and in two-minute drills.

“We’ve been doing a rotation for I don’t know how many weeks,” Henry said after last week's game. “Keaton has been doing a great job in the run game, and we are both in there doing the best we can.”
