Why David Robertson might be in his final season with the Phillies

David Robertson has bounced around the league over the last few years. In his 17th season in the big leagues, the relief pitcher has played for eight different organizations.

He got his start with the New York Yankees, played for the Chicago White Sox, played for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Miami Marlins, Texas Rangers, and now the Philadelphia Phillies

This is not his first or second stint in Philadelphia, but his third. He played with them in 2019, returned in 2022, and signed with them later in this season. However, signing so late into the year is having its consequences.

Robertston has appeared in 17 games thus far, holding a 4.20 ERA across 15 innings of work. He will become a free agent when the season comes to a close, and the Phillies must decide if they want him back or not.

David Robertson has not been bad this year, but he has not been great either. According to That Ball's Outta Here's Edward Eng, his age and production lately do not make it easy for the Phillies to chase him over the winter.

"Robertson has a 4.20 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP, including faltering a bit down the stretch, in which he has given up six runs in his past eight appearances. With Father Time likely catching up to the 40-year-old veteran, the Phillies should focus on other relief options to bolster their bullpen for 2026."

Robertson's time with the Phillies is likely coming to a close when the season comes to an end. But it would not be surprising to see another team take a chance on the former All-Star reliever if he decides to keep playing beyond this season.
