The Kansas Jayhawks got some brutal news right before tipoff of their Monday night clash with the undefeated and No. 1 Arizona Wildcats.
Darryn Peterson isn't playing.
It was expected to be a clash of the best team in the country against the guy who might be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Instead, Peterson will continue a frustrating season that has seen him sit out at various points for different reasons.
Why isn't Darryn Peterson playing tonight?
Late illness news is what is holding Peterson out, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
A Kansas spokesman told Thamel: “Darryn won’t play tonight. He has flu like symptoms. He went out with the team for warmups, but can’t go.”
On the season, Peterson has played in just 13 games.
He's averaging 20.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
He's shooting 48.9% from the field, 41.% from 3-point range and 79.1% from the foul line.
Clearly, he's a current and future star, even just as a pure freshman.
But he misses one of the potential games of the year, which is quite the bummer.
