A huge blockbuster trade went down in the NHL on Friday night.

The Vancouver Canucks have agreed to trade captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in a deal that will have long-lasting implications. It was reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The full details:

  • Wild get:
    • Quinn Hughes
  • Canucks get
    • Marco Rossi
    • Zeev Buium
    • Liam Ohgren
    • 2026 first-round pick

Hughes is one of the most talented players in Canucks history and has spent eight seasons in Vancouver. That tenure is over.

Why did the Canucks trade Quinn Hughes?

The Canucks traded Hughes in an effort to begin a rebuild.

They're just 11-17-3 this season.

Hughes gave them the chance to bring back a huge return and start fresh.

Still just 26, Hughes is a painful player to give up. The Wild get a defenseman with 23 points in 26 games this season, and 432 points in 459 career games.

The Wild haven't won a playoff series in a decade but get Hughes for this season and next to try and remedy that.

What did the Canucks get in return for Quinn Hughes trade?

The big name in the return for Canucks fans to know is Zeev Buium.

He's a 20-year old defenseman, and the hope will be that he can grow into a Hughes replacement. He was the No. 12 overall pick in 2024.

This season, Buium has 14 points in 31 games, and he should slot right into the top-four for Vancouver.

Rossi will likely slot in as the No. 2 center for Vancouver and is a solid player who is still just 24 years old. Last season, Rossi had 24 goals and 36 assists in 82 games.

Ohgren is a solid prospect, and a first-round pick can add another one, too.
