Why Caitlin Clark's fifth technical foul wasn't rescinded by the WNBA

Caitlin Clark was beside herself when she was assessed her fifth technical foul of the season on Monday.

Clark was handed the tech for clapping after she was whistled for a personal foul on DeWanna Bonner during the Indiana Fever's 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury.

Before the Fever and the Mercury meet in a rematch on Wednesday night, Clark will be disappointed to know that the WNBA has "not rescinded" her disputed tech.

For what it's worth, Fever publicly maintain that they are still in the process of appealing the technical foul.

The sequence that led to Clark's fifth tech this season began with 7:57 remaining in the fourth quarter of Monday night's game.

Clark fouled Bonner, which led to a scuffle that enveloped several players.

Clark was deemed to have "instigated" when she began clapping toward the Mercury bench as officials attempted to defuse the conflict.

That, for now, is the reason why the WNBA is not striking Clark's fifth technical off the record.

In addition, Clark will be fined $1,000 and the league will send her a warning letter. If and when she picks up a eighth technical foul, she will be assessed a one-game suspension -- which the Fever will be desperate to avoid, given Clark's importance to the team.
