The San Francisco 49ers are currently 6-1 and enter their Week 8 bye with a lot of reason to feel confident in their team. But with the state of the roster, they need some help.

While plenty of fans and media will point to the wide receiver room as an area to upgrade, the real position to keep an eye on is the defensive line. The 49ers need DL help, and as their bye week gets underway, they've reportedly made a move.

According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, the 49ers are reuniting with DeForest Buckner in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts. So, why are the 49ers trading for this three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman? There are plenty of reasons why this move was made.

Why 49ers are trading for DeForest Buckner

"Reunion! The Colts are trading three-time Pro Bowl DL DeForest Buckner to the 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round pick, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports," Pelissero.

Buckner previously was with the 49ers during the early portion of his NFL career, getting drafted No. 7 overall by the 49ers back in 2016.

He then joined the Colts for a while, and now, 10 years after being drafted in the first round, he is back with the 49ers as they look to make a Super Bowl push this season.

Why did they trade for Buckner? Well, besides the appeal of reuniting with such a talented player, the 49ers also badly needed defensive line help.

CJ West and Alfred Collins are hurt, and Nick Bosa is banged up as well. Adding Buckner to this defensive line will allow the 49ers to raise the floor of this unit, while also raising the ceiling.

A fully healthy defensive front after the team's Week 8 bye could have Bosa, Mykel Williams, Gracen Halton, Osa Odighizuwa, Keion White, and Romello Height, with Buckner added to the mix.

Plus, after the Seattle Seahawks made their own trade with the Colts, landing All-Pro offensive guard Quenton Nelson, the 49ers had to counter with some move.

While a fourth-round pick isn't nothing in terms of draft capital, especially for a veteran rental like Buckner, it's more than worth it to improve this defensive front with a chance of winning the Super Bowl very much in play this year.

Between the fit on the roster, the need this trade fills, and the familiarity between player and team, this trade makes perfect sense for the 49ers. Why did they make this trade? There wasn't a more obvious move the team should've made this season than this one.
