Why 17-year old wunderkind Gilberto Mora isn't starting for Mexico at World Cup

Gilberto Mora has a bright future for the Mexican national team.

He'll have to wait just a little longer to get its first World Cup stage, though. Mexico's first starting 11 of the 2026 edition of FIFA's worldwide tournament doesn't include Mora, the 17-year old wunderkind.

Mexico is taking on South Africa and has left Mora out in favor of more experienced attackers.

It may be a logical move, but there will definitely be some fans bummed out they can't watch Mora play from the outset of the tournament.

Mexico has a young star of their own to watch and his name is Gilberto Mora.

Aged just 17, he is an attacking midfielder who operates centrally and to the left. He's not a guaranteed starter for El Tri but he is one to look out for#FIFAWC #MEXRSA pic.twitter.com/1OW2ubVjsJ

Mora seems likely to feature off the bench, and maybe start later in the tourney, but not in game one.

Why isn't Gilberto Mora starting for Mexico today?

El Tri has gone with a more experienced forward group.

Raul Jimenez was always going to start at striker, but it's the wingers Julian Quinones and Roberto Alvarado who get the first crack over Mora.

Don't be surprised at some squad rotation as this tournament goes on, particularly in the heat of the North American summer.

Mora plays for Tijuana in Liga MX and is a fast-rising star who should end up in Europe soon.

And despite not starting the opener, there'll still be plenty of chances for him to make his imprint on this tournament.
