The New Orleans Saints quarterback future just quickly became their quarterback present.
Derek Carr announced his retirement on Saturday morning, and while his shoulder injury already was going to press some youth into a big spot, it's an even more pressing concern now.
The Saints have a bunch of options, but they'll have to decide who the best one is from a list of mostly unproven commodities.

Saints QB depth chart
The New Orleans Saints currently have three quarterbacks under contract:
- Tyler Shough
- Spencer Rattler
- Jake Haener
Shough was just chosen as the No. 40 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Louisville. He'll turn 26 years old before the season starts after seven college seasons.
He was a fast-riser up draft boards late in the cycle for his ability to make impressive throws from all sorts of angles.
Rattler was a fifth-round pick in 2024. He had previously been viewed as a possible first-rounder but struggled late in his college career.
As a rookie, Rattler started six games, going 0-6. He completed 57 percent of his passes with four TDs and five INTs.
Haener was a fourth-round pick in 2023 out of Fresno State, Carr's alma mater.
He made his NFL debut in 2024 and started one game, a loss. In limited action, Haener completed 18-of-39 passes for 226 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Whoever takes over will have a heck of a lot to prove.
Shough is probably the early favorite, and given his ample college experience, he might just be ready.
