Who is Petey Halpin? Why Guardians called up outfielder with fun name to replace George Valera

1 hour ago 4

The Cleveland Guardians made the first half of this roster move on Thursday when they sent down George Valera to Triple-A.

That meant a call-up was still coming, and it arrived on Friday, when the Guardians promoted Petey Halpin from Columbus, according to Guardians Prospective.

Valera's demotion was in part because Angel Martinez has proven he has to play in the outfield pretty much every day, although promoting a different outfielder doesn't reallocate resources. Halpin does bring the benefit of being able to play centerfield, unlike Valera.

Halpin has been in MLB before, but only briefly. It's worth revisiting what's worth knowing about the new guy.
