Who is Giuliano Simeone's dad? Why Argentina's surprise starter vs. England is 2nd-generation national team player

1 hour ago 4

Argentina made a big call for the World Cup semifinal matchup with England on Wednesday. Giuliano Simeone gets the start.

He's expected to add some much-needed width to the Argentine attack, which is something that they have been lacking just a bit during this tournament.

Simeone has a chance to make himself a national hero if he delivers on this massive stage. A spot in Sunday's World Cup Final against Spain awaits the winner of Wednesday's match in Atlanta.

For Simeone to help Argentina get there, though, he won't have to rely just on his own instincts. He's also the son of a legend whose life-long influence should only help the cause.

Who is Giuliano Simeone's dad?

Giuliano is the son of Diego Simeone.

Diego, now 56 years old, has been shown on television broadcasts at Argentina's matches rooting on not just his son but the whole team.

At present, Diego is the manager of Atletico Madrid in Spain's La Liga, one of the top clubs in the world.

As a player, Diego made 108 appearances for Argentina and scored 11 goals.

He also starred in Europe for notable clubs like Sevilla, Inter Milan, Lazio and yes, Atletico Madrid.

Giuliano has come through the Atletico Madrid system while also doing a couple of loan spells elsewhere in Spain.

He enters the World Cup semifinal having scored two goals for his country.

Now, he'll try to follow in his father's impressive footsteps.
