The San Antonio Spurs don’t want to go back home with a 3-1 NBA Finals deficit, and it’s showing in their play thus far.
The Victor Wembanyama-led Spurs dominated the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden during the first half of their Game 4 clash, entering the break with a commanding 76-49 lead. It’s safe to say a three-point barrage helped San Antonio take control of the game in the first 24 minutes.
San Antonio connected on 14 of their 26 three-point jumpers (54%), making it near impossible for New York to keep pace with the five-time NBA champions. Given that the Spurs are on pace to convert 28 triples on Wednesday night, it feels appropriate to raise the question: Who holds the record for the most threes in an NBA Finals contest?
To answer that question, we’d have to go back in time a little, specifically to the 2017 NBA Finals matchup vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. Although Golden State ultimately bested Cleveland in five games to win their first title in the Kevin Durant era, the Cavaliers had their way with Stephen Curry and company in Game 4.
Cleveland notched 24 threes in their much-needed 137-116 victory over Golden State, which is still an NBA record to this day. With the way the Spurs are shooting the ball, though, that could change by the end of the night.
