Italian top flight professional football is one of the oldest establishments in the global game.

Officially beginning prior to 1900, the nation's football heritage is steeped in history, from crowning achievements to world-class heroics to a number of scandals.

Now that the decade-long dominance of Juventus has been broken, Italian football has entered a new era, one of increased parity amongst the top-tier clubs in the nation, but it still remains quite top-heavy on the whole.

The Sporting News takes a brief look at the history of professional football in Italy and which clubs are the most successful across the entirety of the nation's celebration of the beautiful game.

When was Serie A established?

Serie A was first established in 1929, which began the current, recognized first division of Italian professional football.

Prior to that, Italian professional football was constantly molding and changing, with the FIGC (Italian federation at that time) battling with other organizing bodies such as the FIF and the CCI.

With Serie A eventually established and consistency achieved, Inter won the first league title in the 1929/30 season, with the first 11 Scudettos of the Serie A era won by Inter, Juventus, or Bologna.

Who has the most Italian first division titles?

Italian football has long been dominated by the elite clubs, shown by the fact that only 16 teams have ever won the top flight title in Italy since professional football was first recognized in 1898.

Juventus has the most having won 36 league titles in club history, including 29 of those coming in the Serie A era. The club won nine consecutive Serie A championships from 2011/12 to 2019/20 but have not won since that streak was broken.

The next two on the list are the two Milan clubs, with AC Milan just one title behind San Siro rivals Inter. Then there is a big gap to the leaders of the rest of the pack, Genoa, who were dominant in the early days of Italian football but have not won a title in over a century.
