The Chicago White Sox are looking to be trade deadline buyers this season, as they pursue help for the starting rotation more than any other position group on the roster.
As good as Davis Martin has been, the White Sox desperately need more help at the top of the rotation if they want to seriously contend for a postseason spot.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed a trade idea which would have the White Sox send a pair of prospects to the San Francisco Giants way for 3.39 ERA former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to bolster the rotation.
White Sox trade idea lands Robbie Ray for 2 prospects
"The Trade: Chicago White Sox acquire LHP Robbie Ray from San Francisco Giants for LHP Shane Murphy and RHP Duncan Davitt," Miller writes.
Adding Ray at the cost of two prospects, both of which aren't their best prospects, would be a nice move to make at this year's deadline. Davitt is 26 years old, and Murphy is 25; neither is someone the White Sox are likely to use long-term.
If there is cause for concern with this trade idea, it would be that Ray is a rental. But, at the cost of Davitt and Murphy, it would be a worthwhile move for the White Sox.
Ray has a 3.39 ERA this season with a 7-6 record and 1.3 bWAR on the season. He has 82 strikeouts in 95.2 innings pitched with a 4.65 FIP, so the underlying metrics are a little concerning.

But the 13-year MLB veteran, and former Cy Young winner, could join the White Sox and start to pitch a little better on a contending team in his age-34 season.
While the White Sox have been linked to pitchers who could be long-term options, those players will cost a fortune to acquire. Adding Ray at this price tag would be more than worth it for the White Sox this summer.
Murphy and Davitt aren't nothing, but compared to their top prospects, this is a very reasonable package from the White Sox's perspective.
This trade idea would be great for Chicago, as they're significantly improve the rotation, landing a veteran starter to resolve the team's biggest need, all at the cost of two lower-ranked prospects.
