The Chicago White Sox are having an incredible 2026 season so far, as they've gone from a 100-loss team in 2025 to becoming a legitimate postseason contender this year.
Now, with the 39-34 record that's right in lock-step with the Cleveland Guardians for the AL Central lead, the White Sox are projected to be buyers by the MLB trade deadline. But what would the White Sox even look to add this summer?
According to former MLB general manager Jim Bowden for The Athletic, the White Sox are reportedly seeking out starting rotation help as their top trade deadline need this summer.
White Sox's top trade deadline need is starting pitching
"If they stay in the race, GM Chris Getz is prepared to be a buyer, with starting pitching being his top target," Bowden writes.
While Davis Martin, who has a 3.31 ERA with 83 strikeouts and a 9-3 record in 14 starts, might be an All-Star candidate this season, the rest of the rotation is a bit shaky.
Sean Burke has a 3.89 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 15 outings and 11 starts, while Anthony Kay has a 4.61 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 15 outings and 13 starts for the White Sox this year.
Erick Fedde is someone the White Sox must replace, as his 4.50 ERA this season isn't close to good enough to be part of a postseason rotation.
Noah Schultz is on the injured list and is starting a rehab assignment soon. But his 5.82 ERA this season leaves a bit to be desired.
MORE: Tarik Skubal being traded by Tigers would help him in free agency
It's clear this rotation could use some help, and with the White Sox looking for someone who can be a part of the rotation for more than just 2026, their trade options are a little more limited.
Reid Detmers of the Los Angeles Angels is an obvious fit, as is Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers and Freddy Peralta of the New York Mets don't make sense, as they're expensive rentals.
This White Sox team needs rotation help, but they shouldn't mortgage the future either. Adding a veteran starter is fine, but doing so for only 2026 doesn't make as much sense for a young, ascending team like the White Sox.
