White Sox make surprise Noah Syndergaard announcement on comeback trail

Noah Syndergaard just wanted to get back to the big leagues.

That won't happen with the Chicago White Sox, though.

On Sunday, the White Sox announced that they were releasing Syndergaard. He hadn't yet made it to Chicago after signing earlier in the season.

The 32-year old former phenom made six minor league starts.

The White Sox had him start off in the Arizona Complex League to get tuned up, and there, he had a 2.93 ERA in four outings with 12 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.

His move up to Triple-A Charlotte didn't go as well. 

In just two outings with Charlotte, Syndergaard allowed nine runs in eight innings (10.13 ERA) with just two strikeouts.

Syndergaard last appeared in MLB in 2023 with the Dodgers and Guardians.

He's a long way removed from his heyday with the Mets, and it may be time to accept that Syndergaard doesn't have any more major league days in his future.

If he couldn't break through with the struggling White Sox, there probably isn't a ton of hope out there elsewhere.

Syndergaard, aka Thor, will turn 33 years old on Aug. 29. Many pitchers are still thriving at that age.

But it looks like the 6-foot-6, long blonde hair, fast-rising ace will remain in our memories as a shooting star, someone whose name and fleeting excellence will linger much longer than his days as an ace ever did.
