The Mets’ malaise, which reached 10 losses in 11 games with Tuesday night’s latest setback against Atlanta, is well past the point of waving off as a bad week or series.
Doom was in the air even as the Mets took a 3-0 lead at a sweltering Citi Field behind the returning Frankie Montas. Then the bats went cold and the bullpen imploded during a five-run sixth inning for the Braves.
As The Post’s Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman have both covered with depth and expertise, there are structural issues here coming to the fore.
The bottom of the lineup is a serious issue, the starting pitching is regressing and/or injured, the Mets are still in a playoff spot (two-game cushion in the wild-card standings) but have fallen out of first place.
