Hedda follows Henrik Ibsen's classic, famed stage work Hedda Gabler. This film works as a moody psychological tale, showcasing passion, inner limits, and urges alongside power plays. Written and directed by Nia DaCosta, featuring Tessa Thompson in the titular role, with Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock, and Nina Hoss in major roles.

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025, and then made its way to select US theaters on October 22, 2025. It finally debuted globally on Prime Video on October 29, 2025. Set in England in the 1950s, the action unfolds over one charged night as buried tensions and forbidden desires erupt within the walls of a grand country estate.

As reported by 4Filming, a significant portion of the movie was filmed across England, with a focus on Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. Filmmakers utilized authentic heritage properties to create the mid-century setting of the film. Most scenes were taken at Flintham Hall, a country house in Nottinghamshire.

As Director Nia DaCosta noted in an interview with Roger Ebert back in October 2025, the film's setting in the '50s made the mood stronger; she gave her take on switching the location from Norway to England:

“England, of course, is very repressed [Laughs] and in the 1950s they were super repressed [Laughs]. That’s what’s so interesting about the 1950s.”

Hedda was filmed in the following places:

  1. Flintham Hall, Nottinghamshire, England: Flintham Hall was where most of Hedda was filmed. This Italian-style house was renovated in 1798 and later altered around the 1800s by architect T. C. Hine. Its elaborate lounges, enclosed gardens, and massive 40-foot glass greenhouse stood out. These spots played a key role visually, becoming her residence throughout the story.
  2. Belton Estate, Lincolnshire, England: Built in the 1600s, Belton Estate is situated in Lincolnshire, England. It is approximately half an hour from Flintham Hall, where parts of the movie's outdoor scenes were filmed; its structured gardens served as the backdrop for the maze sequences.

The film is produced by Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Gabrielle Nadig, and Nia DaCosta under Plan B Entertainment and Orion Pictures. Sean Bobbitt handles the cinematography.

In an October 2025 interview with Roger Ebert, Nia DaCosta highlighted that the interiors were decorated with artwork inspired by mid-century surrealism and cubism:

''Cara Brower, and I were all clear from the beginning that this cannot feel like your mom’s 1950s movie. It can’t feel like how we think the 50s were. It has to be like how they actually were. Something that I kept coming back to was that Salvador Dali, that crazy old man, was making art at this time. The Cubists are out there; the Modernists; avant-garde jazz musicians.''

A production notice from Hedda Leo UK Productions Ltd. confirmed extensive on-location filming at the Flintham estate, including night shoots and controlled lighting setups for the conservatory and ballroom sequences.

Hedda is now available to stream digitally on Prime Video.
