ACC football fans will be in for a real treat on Saturday afternoon, when the 14th-ranked SMU Mustangs (8-1) host the Boston College Eagles (5-4) at Gerald Ford Stadium in University Park, Texas (3:30 p.m. ET).
These teams are separated a bit in the standings — SMU is 5-0 in conference play and No. 1 in the ACC, while BC ranks 11th in the ACC and has gone 2-3 in-conference.
That being said, they share something in common — both teams are starting a different QB than they had at the start of the 2024 college season.
BC's change happened more recently. After riding with struggling QB Thomas Castellanos all season, Bill O'Brien finally pulled the plug and lifted him for Grayson James. The junior from Texas promptly took down a 6-2 Syracuse team at home in front of nearly 45,000 Eagles fans.
Now James gets the stiffest test of his football life: a road tilt with the 14th-ranked team in the nation, the SMU Bulldogs, right in his home city of Dallas. It won't be an easy challenge — BC opened as 18.5-point underdogs.
A big reason why SMU has thrived this season is dual-threat QB Kevin Jennings. Last year's Fenway Bowl starter came in to replace Preston Stone after the latter encountered some early-season issues, and the results were immediate.
SMU has rattled off six wins in a row, skyrocketing to the top of the ACC. The Mustangs have some impressive victories, too, including a 48-25 rout of the now 7-1 Pitt Panthers. It's safe to say Rhett Lashlee's squad likes its new home in the ACC.
