Where is Andy Ruiz Jr. now? The story after famous Anthony Joshua upset and current boxing hiatus

8 hours ago 2

Anthony Joshua, a two-time heavyweight champion, has become one of the most well-known boxers in the world, a career that was sparked by a perfect 22-0 record through age 29. But in June 2019, his trajectory changed a bit.

Joshua lost his first professional match in a massive upset to Andy Ruiz Jr., and he followed that with back-to-back losses. While Joshua has gone on to reassert himself in some ways, carrying a career record of 28-4, Ruiz hasn't made much noise in the boxing world since then.

In fact, since his rematch against Anthony Joshua, Andy Ruiz Jr. has participated in just three professional fights.

Here's what to know about Andy Ruiz Jr.'s boxing career since his 2019 upset against Anthony Joshua.

What happened to Andy Ruiz Jr.?

Andy Ruiz Jr. has fought in three professional fights since his rematch against Anthony Joshua in 2019. In 2021, he took down Chris Arreola, and in 2022, he beat Luis Ortiz. Then, in 2024, he had a draw with Jarrell Miller.

After a 105-5 amateur record, also representing Mexico in two 2008 Beijing Olympic Games qualification tournaments, Ruiz came into his 2019 bout with Joshua owning a 32-1 record in his 33 career fights. Originally, Jarrell Miller was going to fight Joshua, but after Miller failed tests for PEDs, it wound up being a Ruiz vs. Joshua bout, with Joshua entering as a favorite.

Ruiz defeated Joshua by technical knockout in the seventh-round on June 1, 2019, earning the unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO title in a huge upset.

Then, a few months later, Ruiz and Joshua were scheduled for a rematch, and Ruiz lost via unanimous decision. After the match, Ruiz said "I should have taken this fight more seriously," also giving Joshua credit.

In 2020, following his loss to Joshua in the rematch, Ruiz switched trainers, from Manny Robles to Eddy Reynoso. Ruiz won his first post-Joshua fight in May 2021, then switched trainers again to Alfredo Osuna, and he beat Luis Ortiz in September 2022.

Ruiz, however, had rotator cuff surgery in his right shoulder following those two fights. It left him inactive for nearly two years, until August 2024, when he took on Miller in Los Angeles.

That fight, Ruiz's first in two years, ended in a majority draw. His right hand was fractured during the fight, and it has caused him to spend more time out of the ring.

However, in August 2025, marking one year since his last fight, Ruiz released footage of him in the gym, although he notably wasn't swinging with his right hand.
