When will Matt Prater, Tyler Bass return? Latest injury updates on Bills kickers

1 hour ago 2

The Buffalo Bills have been plagued by injuries at the kicker position during the 2025 campaign.

First, the Bills lost starting kicker Tyler Bass to injured reserve at the start of the season due to a left groin/hip injury.

Then, his replacement, veteran kicker Matt Prater, suffered a right quadriceps injury in Week 15 that has kept him out of the last two games, including Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With both kickers on the shelf, the Bills have turned to veteran kicker Michael Badgley, who started in Week 16 and will once again start in Week 17.

Here's what we know about when Bass and Prater will be back.

When will Tyler Bass return?

Bass is not expected back this season.

The Bills revealed earlier this month that Bass has likely been shut down for the rest of the 2025 campaign, as his injury didn't heal well enough and he needed surgery.

"He ended up getting a surgery this past week here, so he is basically out for the season," head coach Sean McDermott said. "He was dealing with (the injuries), it wasn't going away, we thought it was going away, then it wasn't going away as he was trying to get himself back ready. So the decision to get surgery was almost made up for him."

When will Matt Prater return?

We do not have a concrete return timeline for Prater, who didn't show any progress this past week after not practicing at all.

Based on the fact that the Bills did not place Prater on IR, it would appear they do not expect him to miss more than three games.

If we had to guess, we would say Prater will be ready for the start of the playoffs, although that has not been confirmed.
