The Montreal Canadiens are the class of the NHL in many ways, but it's been a while since they last one a Stanley Cup.
No team in the NHL has more Stanley Cups than the Canadiens, who have been around since the NHL was first created. Over the next century, Montreal would go on to be the team to beat in most years, producing championships at a rate that rivals teams in other sports like the New York Yankees and Boston Celtics.
However, that rate has slowed down in recent years as the NHL expanded and parity in the league increased. It's harder than ever before to win a Stanley Cup, and it's even more difficult to win multiple in a row like the Canadiens have done many times in their history.
With that in mind, here's a look back at the last time the Canadiens won a Stanley Cup Final.

When was the last time the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup?
Not only were the 1992-93 Montreal Canadiens the last Stanley Cup winner in Canadiens history, the team was also the last winner of any Canadian team.
That Canadiens team was led by goalie Patrick Roy, who won his second of four career Stanley Cups. Roy had been on the Canadiens 1986 championship team, including as a playoff starter, and was in the prime of his career when Montreal won again in 1993.
Other key players on this team included Vincent Damphousse, Brian Bellows, Guy Carbonneau and Kirk Muller, and they were all coached by Jacques Demers. Thanks to Roy, though, this team was built more for goal prevention than goal production.
Montreal had a solid regular season, finishing third in the Adams Division with 102 points. However, during the playoffs, the Canadiens cruised through, with their toughest challenge being a six-game series in the first round against the Washington Capitals.
After dispatching Washington, though, the Canadiens swept the Buffalo Sabres, and beat both the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings in five games.

How many Stanley Cups have the Canadiens won?
The Canadiens have 24 Stanley Cups in its existence, which dates back all the way to the 1910s. Montreal was one of the original six teams and dominated the hockey league in its earliest form in the early 1900s.
In fact, the Canadiens have 11 more Stanley Cups than the Toronto Maple Leafs, whose 13 championships are second in NHL history. That included a stretch of five-straight titles from 1955-1960 and stretch of four-straight from 1975-79.
Between 1943 and 1979, the Canadiens won 18 of their Stanley Cup Finals, which in of itself would be more than any other team in the league. However, the Canadiens haven't won a Stanley Cup in over three decades, and they've only made it back to the Stanley Cup Finals one time in the span.

Canadiens playoff history
The Canadiens first season was in 1917-18 as an original six team, and they lost in the title series that year. Montreal took advantage of the small league and dominated for much of the next 65 years, winning all but two of their titles between 1918 and 1979.
Here's a look at Montreal's full playoff history.
