The Australian cricket team suffered a rare 50-over World Cup loss, as India consigned them to a five-wicket defeat in the Women's World Cup 2025 semifinal at the D.Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. It was the Women in Blue who last defeated Australia in a World Cup game in the 2017 edition.

In the ongoing edition, the Women in Yellow reached the semifinal on the back of 15 straight wins in the tournament history. This streak is the joint-longest in the competition, as they had won 15 matches in the 1997 and 2000 World Cup editions. Nevertheless, Australia's last defeat came against India in the 2017 World Cup semifinal at the County Ground in Derby, as the latter won by 45 runs while defending 281.

On Thursday, the defending champions set the hosts a daunting target of 339 on the back of Phoebe Litchfield's 119, followed by half-centuries from Ellyse Perry (77) and Ashleigh Gardner (63). However, India gunned it down with nine balls to spare as Jemimah Rodrigues struck an unbeaten 127. Harmanpreet Kaur also played a captain's knock of 89 as they ended Australia's reign.

"We did that to ourselves a little bit" - Alyssa Healy on Australia's defeat

Reflecting on the five-wicket defeat, Aussie captain Alyssa Healy claimed that they created opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. She elaborated:

"Good contest in the end. Probably reflecting on that, we did that to ourselves a little bit, probably the first time. Did not finish with the bat well, did not bowl that great, dropped chances in the field. But ultimately, outdone in the end. Everyone contributed beautifully, that is why it is disappointing to stand here right now. We created enough, pressure and opportunities, but not able to capitalize. I am at fault for that as well. Something we pride ourselves on, let ourselves down in that regard."

With India and South Africa set to lock horns in the final, the cricketing fraternity will witness a new champion getting crowned on Sunday, November 2.
