When Ruturaj Gaikwad was stumped for a golden duck on IPL debut by now CSK teammate Sanju Samson

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was stumped for a golden duck on his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut by now teammate Sanju Samson. It was against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Sharjah in the 2020 season.

CSK were chasing 217 runs for victory. Ruturaj Gaikwad walked in to bat at number five in the ninth over, which was bowled by Rahul Tewatia. On the last ball of the over, he bowled a delivery wide outside the off-stump. Gaikwad tried to take him on right away and stepped out to play a big shot. However, he was beaten, and Sanju Samson took the bails off in a flash, completing an easy stumping.

Notably, Sanju Samson was traded from RR to CSK ahead of the IPL 2026 auction in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. Therefore, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Samson will now play in the same team from the upcoming IPL season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to continue as CSK skipper despite Samson's trade

Sanju Samson was leading RR over the past few seasons. However, he will have to wait for captaincy upon his arrival at CSK. The franchise announced that Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue to lead the side in the 2026 season. He took over captaincy ahead of the 2024 season.

In his debut season, Gaikwad did not have a great start. He scored just five runs with two ducks in the first three games. However, he came back strong and proved his worth in the last three matches he played in the 2020 season. He scored three consecutive half-centuries and ended with 204 runs from six matches at an average of 51 and a strike-rate of 120.71.

The franchise showed faith in him and retained him for the 2021 season. It was a breakout year for him as the right-hander scored 635 runs from 16 matches with a hundred and four half-centuries, playing in big role in their winning the title.

When they won the trophy again in 2023, Gaikwad scored 590 runs from 15 innings with four half-centuries. Overall, he has featured in 71 games for CSK so far and has piled on 2502 runs at an average of 40.35 and a strike-rate of 137.47 with two hundreds and 20 half-centuries.
