With an opening win on the road in San Antonio, many thought the Knicks 11-game win streak would come to an end. Well, many thought wrong, as the Knicks' late-game comeback led to a 10-point victory.
San Antonio looked to be the favorites early on and led by as many as 14 points in this contest. In the second half, the Knicks outscored the Spurs by 17 points, thanks to 30 points from Jalen Brunson.
The Spurs' major threats were tied down in Game 1, with Victor Wembanyama going 6-for-21 from the floor. Instead, Julian Champagnie became a major shooting threat from beyond the arc. He made five of ten three pointers for 16 total points and 10 rebounds.
Looking ahead to Game 2, the key for the Knicks is to find better ways to crash the boards. The Spurs grabbed five more rebounds than the Knicks in Game 1, including 4 offensive rebounds. Five different players on the Spurs grabbed at least 8 rebounds in that game, meaning the Knicks have a lot of threats to manage.
If they hope to bounce back, the Spurs need to find better scoring options in the paint. Wembanyama was largely shut down Wednesday, as the Spurs scored 42 points in the paint, while the Knicks scored 50.
